“I could occupy myself for months without changing place, by turning now more to the right, now more to the left.” – Paul Cézanne
The collection of contemporary work by Shift artists in this exhibition is organized as an homage to Paul Cézanne. Cézanne, one of the great Modern painters, sought to continually disintegrate one’s point of view into a series of relationships – one brushstroke in relation to the next, and the relationships between objects in space. In doing this, Cézanne extended the definition of art to include abstraction.
Today, Shift Curator and Cézanne scholar Liz Patterson invites you to discover the relationships between the works shown here using Cézanne’s methods as a determining link. Four methods are presented: figure and ground inversion, realism & materiality, color modulation, and facets.
