1. Shift Gallery Agreement for Half-share Members
This agreement is between Shift Gallery and (Name), who holds a Half-share Membership. It covers the rights and responsibilities of being a Half-share Member in Shift Gallery for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2019.
Membership rights and responsibilities:
Annual exhibitions
Half-share Membership in Shift Gallery entitles an artist-member or curator-member to share the exhibit space for one month during the calendar year with another Half-share member. How the gallery space is divided for the exhibit is up to the two Half-share members to determine. Exhibit schedules are based on the calendar month, with gallery access for hanging beginning the Monday immediately preceding that month’s “First Thursday Art Walk”. Artist use of the gallery for their exhibit month runs through the Saturday immediately preceding the following month’s “First Thursday Art Walk”. Artists typically work together to coordinate gallery access on the Sunday between shows, as there is often time to de-install in the morning and allow the incoming artist to begin installing on Sunday afternoon or evening.
Half-share members are responsible for keeping Shift Gallery open during designated hours the month of their annual joint exhibition (First Thursday: 5-9PM, every Friday & Saturday 12-5PM – except holidays). Members can elect to have the gallery open on additional days as long as they provide staffing. If they aren’t available, they can ask other members to staff the gallery in their place. If neither member is able to open the gallery for regular business hours during their month of exhibition, all effort must be made to place a note on the outside door informing potential visitors of the unexpected closure and an email must be sent to the Tashiro-Kaplan manager at commercial@tashirokaplan.org.
Following the take-down of their exhibits, Half-share members are expected to patch and paint the gallery walls to their pre-exhibit state in preparation for the next artist’s monthly exhibit.
All artist-and curator-members are encouraged to use the window display space located in the Shift Gallery entryway to promote their exhibit during the month of their exhibit. If a member does not want to use this space, the rest of the group must be notified a month in advance to give another member the chance to install a window exhibit for that month.
Sales
All members of Shift Gallery retain 100% of their sales for artwork sold during their annual Shift Gallery exhibit. When the sale of artwork results from a Shift Gallery group exhibit, the artist-member will retain 100% of the sales amount, unless the exhibiting venue takes a commission.
Insurance
All artwork displayed in Shift Gallery is insured for theft or damage. The artwork of Shift members who participate in exhibitions at other venues is not ensured by the Shift Gallery insurance policy. In these cases, artist-members are responsible for insuring their own artwork if the exhibiting party does not carry an insurance policy.
Annual fee
Based on projected expenses the annual fee for Half-share members for 2019 is expected to be approximately $1,140. A Half-share member agrees to pay the monthly fee for the duration of the period stated in this agreement to cover rent, utilities, and insurance. If a member decides to leave Shift Gallery before the agreement time period has ended, the member is still responsible for the balance of the annual fee (if not paid in full). No refund will be given to members who depart before the agreement time period has ended (if paid in full).
Member participation:
Membership entitles participation in group exhibits that are open to all Shift members, for display either in Shift Gallery or other exhibition venues. Some additional group exhibits might be thematic in nature and only apply to selected members.
All members are expected to participate fully in the work of the gallery.
This includes helping to facilitate group exhibits at Shift Gallery and other venues (as appropriate) by installing and taking down exhibits, patching and painting walls in preparation for the next exhibit, and for staffing the gallery during Shift Gallery’s business hours.
In addition to the responsibilities stated above, all members of Shift Gallery are expected to commit to taking on a gallery job that contributes to the smooth operation of the gallery. Examples of jobs include marketing, managing the website and email account, researching venues for group exhibits, writing grants, managing finances, and handling carpentry needs. Members are responsible for carrying out their gallery job responsibility for the entire calendar year for which they join Shift, even if they elect to drop their membership before the year is out.
All members are expected to fulfill their responsibilities and take initiative in areas that fall outside of prescribed jobs, as the need arises. Each member commits to doing everything they can to make Shift Gallery the best artist-run gallery in the region. Shift Gallery is a cooperative gallery. Members who do not participate in ongoing gallery responsibilities, or take the initiative to help with incremental gallery tasks, might be asked to reconsider their commitment to Shift Gallery at the end of the year.
