July 7-30, 2022
Opening Reception: First Thursday, July 7, 5-8pm
A blank space to artfully inhabit once a year without judgments or restrictions continues to be the animating force of Shift Gallery. Members rely on the breathing space and security this freedom gives them to experiment, dig deeper or take risks in their practice and still be able to count on an annual outing of their work, wherever their aesthetic interests and wanderings lead them. Shift shows, as a result, are reliably lively, varied and unpredictable—a must-see for First Thursdays art walkers in the Pioneer Square district.
This year, despite upended routines and craziness in the world, Shift’s modus operandi was no different. People explored and produced work employing new technologies. Some normally working in two dimensions ventured into the third. Painters made prints, printmakers painted or made sculpture. Ceramicists hung their work on walls. Several artists worked and showed in multiple mediums. Others collaborated across mediums or worked collectively to a unifying theme. Still others expanded their work into installations or sought residencies to concentrate on new directions.
In 2022, as their admirers and followers have come to expect, Shift artists kept shifting gears.
