For the month of June, Shift Gallery presents Material Connections, artists Anna Macrae and Lynda Harwood-Swenson show new works on paper, and two and three dimensional constructions. Using the making process as a starting point, artists Macrae and Swenson investigate ideas through discarded materials, paint, and print.

In her recent paintings and monoprints, Lynda Harwood-Swenson considers landscape from two viewpoints; from the wide, cool vista on the horizon and from an interior landscape of imagination and emotion.

Working on paper and using cut up pieces of plastic as plates to print on, her smaller monoprints are puzzled together using a harmony of rich colors to create expansive views. In contrast, her paintings, also on paper but much larger, use thick, dense, acrylic flashe paint applied mainly by pallet knife, highlighting the physicality of the paint itself, with added details of gestural mark making.

There is a fine line between the subject matter of the prints and paintings, and both move between the viewpoints of wide horizon and interior landscape. The duality of both an interior and exterior experience is a continual theme in Swenson’s work.
