Sandra (S. E.) Penney | Come December

June 5 – 28, 2025

Opening/First Thursday Art Walk: June 5, 5-8 pm
Artist Talk with Karen Klee-Atlin: June 14, 1pm

In this series of reduction linoleum prints titled Come December, Sandra Penney examines Southern California’s vibrant suburban mix of quiet solitude and communal activity during the year’s darkest month.

Each print is a meditation on the interplay of light and shadow, and an exploration of an emotional landscape where togetherness and isolation exist simultaneously. The reduction technique, in which the same linoleum block is carved and printed multiple times, parallels the way these moments feel—layered, ephemeral, and full of light amidst the darkness.

Inspired by Edvard Munch’s moonlit paintings, as well as by Peter Straub’s poetic line, “the world is half night,” this series celebrates how the familiar becomes both new and strange when glimpsed from a darkened street.
