Morris Graves (1910–2001), a key figure in the “Northwest School,” famously used the phrase “Sky of the Mind” to describe the inner spiritual landscape that informed his work.

Sky of the Mind brings together four artists — Karey Kessler, Soo Hong, Kalina Winska, and Teresa Getty — who paint with their inner eye to convey abstractions that are as much states of mind as places.

Karey Kessler uses the visual language of cartography to evoke the entangled ways in which the external world around us and the internal worlds within us are interconnected.

Soo Hong uses fluid abstraction to map the invisible boundaries between memory and belonging.

Kalina Winska draws from weather patterns, climate models, futuristic landscapes, and virtual realities to build speculative landscapes that blur reality and representation, the environment, and its technological translations.

Teresa Getty creates abstract works that inhabit the space where intention, memory, and intuition meet. Through layered surfaces and moments of emergence, her work invites viewers into landscapes of thought that resist fixed interpretation, allowing meaning to unfold slowly through looking.

Together, these four practices suggest that painting remains one of the few ways to map the worlds we carry inside us.
