Susan Tureck | The Petticoat: Giving it a Twirl

November 7 – 30, 2024

Opening/First Thursday Art Walk: November 7, 5-8 pm
Artist Talk with Cynthia Hibbard: Saturday, November 9, 2-3 pm

The Petticoat holds a significant place in fashion history. What began as a functional undergarment in the 1700s, the Petticoat rose to its pinnacle in the 1950s to 1960s. Girls sought out the starched, stiffened tulle half-slip to create the large puff to widen their skirts. It was not uncommon to layer more than one Petticoat to emphasize that extra wide dramatic look. At the peak of this fashion style I was of the age to seek the infamous Petticoat like many young girls. Although that full fluff of the Petticoat slip was replaced by the Spanx shapewear period, it will forever endure.
