Peggy Murphy
Artist Statement
I initially became interested in painting because I loved fooling around with paint. I attended the University of Washington where I encountered conceptual ideas about art but the real allure of painting continued to be the materiality of paint, the physicality of painting, and having my own little chaos to control. Gestural abstraction has always been a major influence and the landscape an important reference, but evolving technical and intuitive skills often push me in unexpected directions. In my current work objects and symbols play a role and content unfolds within the process. Foremost, I believe in the power and pleasure of “looking” and entrust in my paintings this simple ideal.
