Barbara Shaiman

ARTIST STATEMENT

After 24 years as director/curator of SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum I returned to my original calling as a ceramic sculptor. My two current series reference my love of the natural environment as well as my concern about the dangers it faces from climate change and devastating political policies. The rocks, arches and cave entrances I have seen in the desert Southwest and on the Northwest coastline inspire me as does my concern about current attacks on our National Monuments and other wild lands. I prefer the work to be enigmatic, not to supply answers but to encourage us to think about our relationship to the environment with a somewhat altered vision.
