Craig van den Bosch | Pop Mythology

March 7 – 30, 2024

Opening/First Thursday Art Walk: March 7, 5 – 8 pm

Inspired by Italiot Greek narrative vases from the 6th to 8th century B.C.E., and referencing Magna Graecia, the regions of southern Italy colonized by the Greek, Pop Mythology boldly reinterprets the traditional vase form and story found on Italiot vases. Reflecting on an assortment of American mythologies written by historian-statesman George Bancroft in the 1850s, the Declaration of Independence, and recent political myths, the works also suggest the death of patriarchal dependent systems that seem synonymous with myth.

Combining early animal symbolism in mythological stories from various European cultures, each piece references and challenges both the language in the Declaration of Independence and Bancroft’s national myth creating a nuanced play on words like equality, liberty, self-government, justice, life, and freedom.
