Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how challenging it is to be an artist and the courage it takes to create. In this fractious world of upside down politics that views diversity of any kind as aberrant, it can be difficult to focus. Yet to push through the distractions and find one’s creativity and imagination is both urgent and necessary. For me, it’s about doing the work by drawing inspiration from a treasure-trove of family photos. These captured moments provide an endless source of affirmation, a reflecting pool of sorts, a balm. As I focus on the stories and memories that the photos depict, I feel a sense of ease and comfort that strengthens me and enables me to find joy.
