Opening/First Thursday Art Walk: June 5, 5-8 pm
Peggy Murphy explores the duality between image/text, color/line, and heart/mind in her collection of paintings, All is Leaf. In this work she reference’s two diverse sources of botanical information – botanical textbooks and Goethe’s 1790 treatise on plant morphology, The Metamorphosis of Plants. The romantic/metaphysical slant of Goethe’s sensibilities clearly wins the dual of aesthetics and overtakes any pretense towards botanical illustration in these paintings. Here line and text is subjugated by exuberant color and pattern while botanical-like forms live in tenuous geometric formations or float freeform like singular entities in dark space. In these pieces Murphy surrenders to the idea that the imaginative impulse takes precedent over observational accuracy.
