Dodi Fredericks
Artist Statement
My watercolor painting practice of evocative rather than literal landscape as well as suggestible abstraction in line and form are influenced by my previous professions as a landscape architect and potter. In ceramics my inspirations were Japanese Mashiko and Okinawa stoneware and porcelain with calligraphic surface patterns made liquid in the fire. My watercolor abstracts recall the liquid aspect of the heat-induced fusion of pottery glazes skimming over vessels with calligraphic decorations. In landscape architecture my practice was always to create environments that conjured the inspirational experience of iconic Northwest settings. My paintings are constructed, intentionally spare and imagined views that borrow from Puget Sound wetland flats, islands, beaches, bays and the agricultural lands of eastern Washington.
